Your Complete Signal Chain

Map every wire from musician to viewer: stage → Behringer Wing (FOH) → AES50 snake → X32 (raw feeds, gain only from Wing) → stream bus → Audient iD14 → Vimeo.

🎯 Learning objectives

  • Draw your full signal flow from mic to stream without looking
  • Explain the Wing (FOH) vs X32 (stream/production) split over AES50
  • State what “raw + gain only” from the Wing means for your X32 mix
  • Identify clip points from Wing preamps through iD14
  • Document AES50 routing, backups, and Sunday reliability checks

🗺️ Your production path (real Sunday model)

This academy is built around the chain you actually run — a two-console system:

1 · StageMics, DI, drums, talkback
2 · WingFOH board · preamps · room mix
3 · AES50Digital snake to X32
4 · X32Stream/production mix (raw + gain)
5 · iD14Into the computer
6 · VimeoLivestream
Critical fact

The Behringer Wing is Front of House — it owns the room mix. The X32 receives a digital multichannel feed over AES50. What you get on the X32 is essentially raw channel signal with gain already set on the Wing — not the Wing’s EQ, compression, FX, or fader rides. Your X32 job is to build the stream (and any production mix) from those clean splits.

Every Sunday problem lives in one of those boxes. Troubleshooting starts by asking: “Where is the signal last good?”

🔀 Wing FOH ≠ X32 stream mix (by design)

You already have the pro architecture most churches wish they had:

  • Wing @ FOH — optimizes for the room (PA voicing, energy, monitor culture, fader rides for the sanctuary).
  • AES50 split → X32 — gives production a multichannel digital feed that is independent of the Wing’s processing and LR rides.
  • X32 — you build EQ, dynamics, FX, balance, and a dedicated stream bus for online listeners.
What “raw + gain only” means

If a vocal is quiet on the X32, the first question is often: is Wing preamp gain healthy? You are not hearing the Wing’s channel EQ/comp. You are hearing the gain structure set at the Wing preamps (plus any digital trim/routing on the X32). Coordinate with FOH: gain is a shared resource.

  • Do build a dedicated stereo stream path on the X32: groups → mixbus or matrix with its own EQ/comp/limiter → outs to iD14.
  • Don’t assume the room “sounds fine” means the stream is fine — different console, different listeners, different mix.
  • Keep an input list that maps Wing channel / AES50 slot → X32 channel so patches never guess.
Common failure

FOH raises Wing gain mid-service for the room → X32 channels suddenly hot/clip. Fix: agree gain discipline, watch X32 meters after any Wing gain change, and keep a little digital headroom on the X32 path.

📡 Clip points on a Wing → AES50 → X32 path

  1. Wing preamp / input clip — Stage source too hot into FOH. This is the first gain stage. If it clips here, the AES50 feed to the X32 is already damaged.
  2. X32 channel clip — Digital feed or local trim too hot. Don’t “fix” with fader alone; coordinate Wing gain or reduce X32 digital trim/headroom settings.
  3. X32 mix bus / matrix clip — Too many channels summed hot on the stream path. Lower group/bus levels; use bus compression carefully.
  4. iD14 input clip — X32 stream outs too hot into the interface. Turn down X32 output or iD14 input gain.

Vimeo will happily stream a distorted mess. The platform does not save bad gain structure — and neither does AES50 if the Wing preamp already clipped.

🧪 Lab — document your real wiring

  • Draw a one-page diagram: stage input → Wing channel → AES50 slot → X32 channel → stream outs → iD14 → computer → Vimeo.
  • Print a Wing↔X32 patch map (same names on both desks).
  • Confirm AES50 link status/clock before doors; note who is clock master (usually Wing/FOH ecosystem).
  • Agree a “gain change” hand signal/radio call between Wing FOH and X32 stream.
  • Write a break-glass backup: if AES50 drops, or if iD14 fails, what is plan B?

Module quiz

Need 70% to pass

1. In your church stack, why doesn’t the X32 simply “get the Wing mix”?
Why: You receive multichannel raw splits with Wing gain applied — then you build stream processing on the X32.
2. Signal is clean on X32 meters but distorts in the computer. First place to check?
Why: If X32 is clean, the handoff into the interface/OS is the next clip point.
3. Best troubleshooting question when audio dies on stream only (room still fine)?
Why: Room OK means Wing/FOH is alive — binary-search the stream half of the chain.
