Gain Structure & Soundcheck
The professional order of operations for line check, gain setting, and a calm, repeatable soundcheck.
Learning objectives
- Run a line check in under 15 minutes with a checklist
- Set channel gains correctly using meters and ears
- Follow a band soundcheck order that protects hearing and time
- Lock a pre-service level reference for stream and room
The pro order of operations
- Power & digital link — confirm Wing + AES50 + X32 online and clocked before artistry.
- Line check (both desks) — one source at a time: Wing hears it, X32 meters it. No EQ art yet.
- Wing gain — artist performs at real peak level. FOH sets preamps; stream verifies AES50 levels.
- X32 HPF / stream prep — high-pass non-bass sources on the stream desk as needed.
- FOH owns monitors/room — Wing builds sanctuary mix; don’t fight them from X32.
- X32 stream build — drums → bass → guitars → keys → vocals → playback for online.
- Stream path verify — headphones on iD14/stream, not only the room PA.
- Speaking mic polish on stream — intelligibility is non-negotiable for Vimeo.
Gain is mostly a Wing conversation
In your stack, preamp gain lives on the Behringer Wing (FOH). The X32 sees that gained raw signal over AES50.
- FOH should set Wing gain while the musician plays/sings at real performance level.
- X32 verifies healthy digital meters — not red, not microscopic.
- If stream needs a source louder, prefer better balance/EQ/comp on X32; if the feed is truly starved or clipping, radio FOH to adjust Wing gain.
- Never “fix” a bad Wing clip with X32 faders — distortion is already baked into the digital feed.
Ring out later, not during gain
Don’t notch twelve EQ frequencies while levels are still moving. Stable Wing gain + AES50 lock first. Feedback/room control is primarily a Wing/FOH problem; stream has its own tasteful EQ pass.
Lab — write your church’s soundcheck script
- Create a printed line-check order matching your input list.
- Time a dry run. Goal: calm, boring, repeatable.
- Add a hard stop: “Stream path verified” checkbox before doors.
- Record one rehearsal to stream and A/B against a reference church stream you admire.

Module quiz
Need 70% to pass
1. Where is primary preamp gain set in your church stack?
Why: Wing owns preamps; X32 receives raw+gained splits and builds the stream mix.
2. Line check is mainly for…
Why: Line check is technical verification. Art comes after signal exists.
